A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
